Zone Alarm new installation issues / PLEASE help

Windows XP / SP3
Firefox

I've had ZA installed for a long time. It started acting weird last night so I decided to do a clean install by deleting the previous version first. When mousing over desktop icon, ZA kept saying "ZA protection up, UI initializing" and when I tried to launch ZA, the screen was blank, looked odd.

I have spent ALL DAY trying to download the free firewall and no matter which site (ZA or CNET, etc) I download the set up / exe file from, it downloads as an incomplete "part" file and will not work.

I ran a Symantec virus scan and also an A-Squared spyware scan, although my computer is acting weird, the scans say its clean.

Can anyone help? I have a hijack this log if that helps?

Something is definitely wrong.

tpr..

It's suggested at the ZA forum, that the error may be due to a corrupt or incomplete install. It seems to be a common error. Have you used their Removal Tool to rid yourself of any leftover files? You can find it within this post, under B. Removal. It's further suggested to download a fresh copy of ZA using IE. And not to use a Download Manager or Accelerator, as they may corrupt the download.

If the above doesn't help, read the below threads. Despite the similar titles, their content is different. You may find some information, relevant to your situation.

Protection Is Up, UI is Initializing

Protection Is Up, UI is Initializing

I would first run the removal tool and use IE (if possible) as has been suggested at their forum. One of the threads, suggests conflicting software. Another area to look investigate. If you're still having a problem, please post back. No doubt, there are mods or members familiar with ZA.

Best of luck..

To illustrate one simple solution to this Zonealarm access problem (under a new Dell win7 but should apply to generic win7, XP, etc), which I tried after unsuccessfully trying the uninstall/reinstall route and also trying the search for a misplaced vsdatant (mine was located okay)), I was also running AVAST antivirus which also has "shield" protection; through the menu selections ... settings/ status bar .... I turned off the following AVAST shields (but making sure Zonealarm was also installed and running ok) which I think are redundant with zonealarm and my preferences:
> web shield
> p2p shield
> IM shield (instant messaging)
> network shield

Then rebooted the machine and it not only resolved the zonealarm access problem but resolved a problem I had with my home network access.

has firewall protection only. No web shield, p2p shield,IM shield, network shield.
Where is the redundancy?
I also am using AVAST for those functions, in conjunction with ZA for firewall.
Win7-64bit on new Dell 1558 laptop.
Have not had any issues(as I pound loudly on my desk)yet,as it's only been 1 week.

In my case the UI-is-initializing-(forever) issue has been gone after uninstalling the ZA security toolbar; apparently there was a conflict between ZA security toolbar and other browser security toolbar that was installed on the computer.

I have to come back and say that the "UI is initializing" issue came back although the ZA security toolbar was uninstalled, other browser security toolbar being installed on the PC.
My new try was to cancel "Load ZoneAlarm at startup" (from Preferences/General) and to manually start ZA well after the PC booting up. For now it seems to be working.
The starting sequences of operations of the ZA and the operating system and/or the antivirus seem to have a racing issue type of conflict between them. So, letting the operating system and the antivirus start first, then starting later the ZA, seems to be a solution until the ZA developers will coin the root cause of this issue.

Have never had anything but trouble when the word toolbars is involved.Have made it a policy not to use or allow them to be installed,or removed them immediately if tricked into allowing install, and haven't had issues.
Have been using ZoneAlarm free for years on 4-5 computers and haven't had any problems.
Not sure of your internet connection but in my case, cable always on,I would allow ZoneAlarm(as the firewall) to start first and manually start my AV. just my two cents.

no matter which one to start the first, the firewall or the antivirus, but they cannot try to start at the same time if there is a conflict...

just discovered that the windows firewall was on... although I have set it to off since long ago... maybe some updates of any kind have quietly set it to on... and this seemed to be the root cause issue on my computer: the zonealarm start was being blocked by the windows firewall... now the issue is gone and ZA can start at PC bootup

After observing for a longer period of time the behavior of ZoneAlarm free firewall with Windows XP SP3 operating system and AVG free antivirus, my conclusion is that: from time to time, something regarding ZA functioning gets wrong (maybe some alteration in Windows system registry, maybe some resource conflict with the antivirus or some Windows task/service), and then, the "UI is initializing" issue keeps occurring, either at PC boot-up or at later launching of ZA.
The solution that is currently working for me is to reinstall the same version of ZA (on top of the existing one) each time the issue starts occurring again.
