Windows Service Pack 2 will not install

Hi all, a friend is using Vista Home Edition on a HP Laptop and has tried to download Service pack 2, but keeps getting the same message "Failed" We have downloaded the hot fix key and run that, but still no joy. All the other updates are coming down, but not the Sevice Pack 2. Anyone else had this problem?

Many thanks.

Are you talking about the Home Basic or the Home Premium of Vista?

I did not have this problem with mine own version (Vista Home Premium) when I upgraded from SP 1.

IS SP 1 installed? SP2 will not install with out it. To see is it is go to start, right click on computer, go to properties. Look at the top. It should list your OS and if installed the Service Pack. If none are listed then you must install Service Pack one to get SP2 to work.

You can try the downloads at this link: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/935791#Method3

It will provide the downloads for both Service Packs.

I hopes that this helps!

The key when installing such things is to make sure the computer is clean and functioning well.. Cleanout all the junk files, temporary internet files, and Temp folders. Uninstall any programs you don't use.. Run your antivirus and antispyware scans to be sure everything's clean. And once that's done, run a Defrag and Chkdsk to optimize the drive. Restart the computer, then temporarily disable your background antivirus program.

Once that's done, instead of using the online installer for SP2, download the full installer file from the link below.. (The file is fairly large so you'll need a broadband connection to download the file in a reasonable amount of time.) As long as you've already got SP1 installed, then simply run the SP2 installer.

And if you need the full SP1 installer file, here's that link as well.

Hope this helps.

Hi guys, thank you for your advice. I have found since posting my message that he has NOT got SP1 installed, so I will have to install that first and then SP2. If I still have a problem, I will get back to you. Thanks again.

My os is vista home basic 32bit SP1. When try to upgrade vista sp1 to sp2, but unsuccessful.
I would like to know if somebody had the same error code WindowsUpdate_8007371C "WindowsUpdate_dt000" by trying to update to Windows Vista Service Pack 2 (KB948465).

I tried update with Windows Update and manually.

I turn off all programs, running system readiness tool, I also tried the clean boot method but Install Windwos Service Pack 2 Installation was not successful. The SMI primitive installer failed setup or servicing.
Error: ERROR_SMI_PRIMITIVE_INSTALLER_FAILED(0X8007371c)

I tried various manipulations which does have yielded nothing. I start looking too much hassle unanswered.

Your help is very much appreciated.
Thanks

Google Search For: "Error: ERROR_SMI_PRIMITIVE_INSTALLER_FAILED(0X8007371c)"

It appears running a number of tools to find any readiness issues and fix any corrupted files.. The System Readiness Tool and System File Checker are both mentioned as well as in "In Place" udpate.

Hope this helps.

I had the same problem, even downloaded sp2 twice on the advice of a Microsoft tech. No help until I found a blog about the vlite key being the problem. I followed the instructions below, deleted the vlite key from the system registry, & when It rebooted it immediately found & installed sp2.
________________________________________________

1.Click Start
2.In the run box, type regedit, & hit OK.
3.Go to HKLMSoftware & delete the vLite key.
4.Restart your computer and try the Windows Vista SP2 update again.
