Windows Vista Update KB971029

Why do I need this update and why is it important? Dan

First, it's not a "required" update.. It simply adjusts the autorun/autoplay feature on your computer and helps with security..

Effect on end users and end-user software

* Many existing devices in market, and many upcoming devices, use the AutoRun feature with the AutoPlay dialog box to present and install software when DVDs, CDs, and USB flash drives are inserted.
* Users who install this update will no longer receive a setup message that prompts them to install programs that are delivered by USB flash drives. Users will have to manually install the software. To do this, users click Open folder to view the files, browse to the software's Setup program, and then double-click the Setup program to run the program manually.
* Some USB flash drives have firmware that present these USB flash drives as CD drives when you insert them into computers. These USB flash drives are not affected by this update.

Hope this helps.

but didn't know why the autorun feature needed to be changed. Anyway, when I restarted, the update was updated automatically. I guess I had no choice. Unlike OPTIONAL updates,IMPORTANT updates have to be installed. I was worried that the update would mess up my hulu movie watching when I hook my laptop to the tv via hdmi. Thanks for replying. DAN

Whether you visit the Windows Updates site to perform updates or have automatic updates running on the computer, it's possible to "hide" or disable the installation of ANY update. Changing the settings on automatic updates does the trick.

Either way, this particular update shouldn't cause a problem with watching movies at hulu.

Hope this helps.
