Is Google Chrome better than IE8?

Is Google Chrome a better browser to use than IE8? My laptop's OS is Windows Vista Premium 32 bit. I've been using IE8 for sometime but a lot of images on webpages are not appearing, just empty boxes with red "X's" in the upper right hand corner so I Googled my question about it, several hits came back saying to change browsers so I did today, I switched to Google Chrome.

I'm still seeing empty boxes on some websites with red X's" in the upper right hand corner and now when I do something with the finger touch pad there is no sound where before while I used IE8 I would hear a "click" when I did something. It's now like my speakers have been set to mute. I got use to hearing that "click" and now I miss it. Could something in Google Chrome be causing me not to hear my "click" sounds anymore when I choose an action or function?

Chrome is generally faster, sleeker, and easier to use than IE8. And its support for extensions means you can add functionality to your browser that is unavailable to IE8. However, Google has failed to deliver some of the basic functionality of other browsers. For instance, it lacks support for viewing basic XML files by default. Or look through the Options menu to see that even IE6 offers the users more control over their browsing experience without turning to third-party extensions. That's part of the problem with 'keeping it simple'...it typically clashes with customizability. it is one of the reasons I still prefer Firefox; it is a bit slower, but it lets me create the exact browser I want. But, I digress...

For your two issues:
1.) The red 'X' means the image could not be loaded. If it happens it all browsers, it usually means that the website's trying to display an image that doesn't exist. It is an issue with the website that only they can fix.
2.) The browser determines if a sound should play when you perform an action within the browser. Microsoft likes to offer a lot of audio feedback in IE; Google, not so much in Chrome. That's one of the minor considerations when choosing a browser.

John:

So me not being able to see some images except for empty boxes with red "X's" in the corner has nothing to do with me using IE8 as my default browser which I'm back to using now. This Firefox that you mentioned, is it pretty good? Thanks for your comments and have a nice day.

-> Which browser is set as default has no impact on whether an image displays in another browser. If both IE and Chrome fail to display the image, it is safe to say it is not a browser issue.

-> Firefox is the second-most popular browser, after Internet Explorer. It is my preferred browser due to its extremely-customizable nature; as an advanced user, I can modify its functionality and appearance to my heart's content. Chrome's simpler to use and a bit faster, so you may prefer it, but it has a long way to go before I consider making the switch full-time.

The choice of a browser really has more to do with the specific user than anything else. Folks, such as John W, like to tinker with their settings and get the most out of their browser as possible. Many folks like this are very advanced users who like to tinker with everything on their computers. Nothing wrong with that.

However, the average user, like me, doesn't really have a need to customize everything in my browser. BTW, I use both the RC of IE9 and Chrome 10. I did have Firefox installed for a long while, too, but found I just used IE and Chrome the most. I do prefer Chrome for its speed. For example, it's much faster at loading facebook pages than IE, and it does everything I would do in IE faster. Speed matters to me when I'm working the Internet.

So, if you are the type person who wants quick web surfing, then go with Chrome. If you are like John, who likes to customize and tweak everything, go with Firefox or IE.

Of course, you can take the middle road and have one browser for speed and one for customization.

Since IE9 is scheduled to ship next week, comparing IE8 to Chrome is irrevelent. The comparison should be with IE9. I also believe that new versions of Firefox and Chrome will also ship very shortly. Therefore whole questions seems to be moot.

I tried it and went back to Firefox which remains my favorite. IE8 has so much clutter and junk. Firefox 4 will be released soon.

As usual, it depends on your requirements but to me, the speed & sleekness (as someone else said) makes Chrome my choice. To me, it makes more sense with regard to usability. Also, if you you have another PC that you use, you can sync your bookmarks/favorites and settings between the two PC's which is a plus for me.

I can't speak as to why you see the red x's although my lady uses IE and she sees them more often than I (it seems).

And if there were no Chrome, I would use Firefox.

Try Chrome for awhile and you can always export your bookmarks back to IE or Firefox if you want.

At home, I run win7 64-bit and I tried Chrome out of interest but found that my Etisalat e-mail sytem was "corrupted" when I made a "reply". By corrupted, I mean that the reply message was in "HTML" format and not in normal text. Why would that be ?
Chrome was definitely faster on all fronts but I could not use it because of this problem. I also found it strange that "my favourites" did not transfer themselves straight into the Chrome page.

Back on IE8 and waiting for IE9.

If this is an email service through an ISP(and, as such, dependent upon a subscription) I would recommend you consider switching to Gmail or Yahoo.

This way if you ever switch ISP's you don't have to switch email and you can get your Etisalat e-mail forwarded to your Gmail inbox. I'm not sure how long you've been using email but have you noticed how few aol accounts you see these days?

I have had a yahoo account for about 13 years and have moved about six times.

Then again it's a user preference and this is just my three cents.

Try Safari. The Activity Window is a game snatcher on its own.Works amazingly well with Windows too.Who would've thunk it!

Seriously,Safari 1st,Firefox 2nd and Chrome for whatever the hell it is you backed into that doesn't fly on Safari or Firefox.

If you're not an avid downloader,go to apple.com and give Safari a try.It might make you very happy, remember Windows users aren't usually the first to stick their hands up and recommend an Apple construct as a fantastic piece of work.

Just sayin'.

Never heard of it, Thanks for the tip, especially about games! I have a huge Acer tower instead of laptop just so I can game to death in my retirement time - there is no time frame when you are retired - it all just flows.

Chrome has hit Beta version 11.

Firefox is already released in version 4 Release Candidate.

IE9 is, also, available, now, in Release Candidate format.

I should know, I have been using them every day for a whole week now(except FF4, just happened yesterday).

In a sequel post I happened to delete (for a needless tagline) Chris linked to a Chrome review in http://www.slate.com/id/2243727/
