convert to tif?

To whom it may concern:

I have a problem printing some drawings from the Teriostar LP 1020L printer.
Certain drawings I am not able to get an image, the entire image comes out completely black but yet you can see the title block. It was recommended that I convert to tif.
Since the drawings come in a PDF file, I should get a ghost script because certain files are encrypted and I should check with cnet.com
What would you recommend I should download to be able to print out the images?

Thank you

Reply 1 : convert to tif?

Your post is rather incomprehensible:
- certain drawings
- title block
- convert to tif: what?
- get a ghost script
- because
- certain images
- encrypted
- check with cnet.com

The only clear thing: they come in a pdf-file.

If I couldn't print the full content of a pdf-file on a printer without issues, the things I would do are:
1. Try it on another PC that has another printer (so - because I only have one printer at home - I would take the pdf with me to my work and try there).

If that fails also, I'd request another pdf.
If it's OK at work, I would
2. Use another pdf-reader (from Adobe, Foxit, Nitro)
3. Update the printer driver
4. Buy another printer

Booq Boa Squeeze - Personal experiences?

Laptop backpacks by booq

I've been looking at this bag since I ordered my X201. When I ordered the laptop, the bag was out of stock, and reporting some lengthy wait times, so I decided to compromise with a Targus Groove, which was available locally, and cheap. While the Targus is a great bag, especially when considering an overnight trip where I might have to pack clothing, it's not optimal for quick trips to the city, or pretty much any situation where I'm walking any distance with the bag. The items inside tend to shift to the rear and cause back strain, even with the straps nice and snug. The Squeeze looks like it would distribute weight better, and hold it closer to the body - which is my major gripe with the Groove, all the weight hangs out as far back as it can, and causes the strain. I figure this is the place to find someone who's got one of these bags, and perhaps get some idea if this will address what ails me with my Targus.

Reply 1 : Booq Boa Squeeze - Personal experiences?

I have heard nothing but great things about the Boa squeeze and other Booq products. I know a quite a few Alienware M17x users bought Booq bags and had good things to say. and that is a 12 pound laptop! lol

Reply 2 : Booq Boa Squeeze - Personal experiences?

i don't have the Squeeze, but I have used Booq Boa L and the Mamba M. One immediately noticeable awesomeness of the bags are that they have a hiking backpack's 'lightness' while looking no more clunky than an everyday backpack.

Booq bags are the absolutely highest quality, but you pay a hefty premium for that. Another thing to keep in mind is that you get NOWHERE near the amount of space they say you do. Take a look at their pictures and you will only be able to fit about 1/3 of the contents while still being able to easily use the bags(as in not having to repack everything every time you pull one item out).

In the matter of good computer hygiene

I recognize that there may be another forum where this is more appropriate, but I almost always post here unless I have a specific problem and I know which other forum to go to. In this case I don't.

I'm not good at habitually cleaning my computer, but I do have Norton 360 (Its predecessor came with the computer) and periodically I run the scans I feel I need, perhaps every 2 weeks, perhaps longer sometimes.

How often should I be running full scans? Are there better Utilities out there, or is it sort of make your pick and take your chances? I am a merely superficial user, not an utter newbie, nor technologically deaf, but without any tutelage in the ins and outs of computer usage. I can't even figure out how to persuade my keyboard to display French characters, though sometimes it seems to do it spontaneously, and I basically have to Log Off and Log On again to re-set the keyboard to American. May I have some assistance in this matter, including directing me to the proper forum for this sort of wide-ranging issue?

The thing I find most frustrating are what I call pop-unders which don't interfere with the site you're surfing, but when you close the window there they are. I downloaded the Mozilla add-on which was mentioned recently here, and this morning had more pop-unders than ever, 7 I think. Now it doesn't seem to make any difference to performance which says a lot for the AMD Turion X2 processor. It's a Hewlett Packard Pavilion dv7 laptop running Windows 7 assuming that's what followed Windows Vista. The upgrade was done in store as part of the sale (free) and I'm having a senior moment over its name.

Windows and Norton are both computer bugs. There's a patch here...

Reply 2 : In the matter of good computer hygiene

AVG antivirus by Grisoft, Adaware by Lavasoft, Easy Cleaner 2 by Toni Arts, Malware Bytes. Each one does something different with some overlap. You can visit download dot com and find the most popular which is a good indicator of their efficacy.

Reply 3 : In the matter of good computer hygiene

and liked it. I also used AdAware, and I'm obviously going to have to again. Didn't know about Easy Cleaner so I'll investigate, same with Malware Bytes.

As you say, having multiple software apps with different ways of assessing threats, and which overlap one another is better than relying on one.

Most obliged,
Rob

Reply 4 : In the matter of good computer hygiene

If you bought a new car and it's computer required you to buy a bunch of add ons to keep it running wouldn't you get another brand of car? It seems the list of additional software needed to keep Windoze running increases with every new version. When will it stop?

Reply 5 : In the matter of good computer hygiene

the only one active constantly would be the AVG. Adaware now can also stay active in the background, but that can be disabled too. Unfortunate fact of life is an overwhelming majority of computer users in the world are addicted to Windows and it's programs, and for compatibility reasons in spite of it's shortcomings at times, the compatibility factor and greater number of third party programs that run on it rather than Linux or some other system, makes using Windows a necessity at times.

If all someone wanted to do was browse, download email, do picture and video conversions, and simple document files, and buying a computer that didn't come with an operating system, I'd advise them to go with a free linux OS.

Reply 6 : In the matter of good computer hygiene

Go with free programs such are suggested in the help forums. I use Avast, Malwarebytes and SuperAntispyware and really only scan about once every week or so. Do use a router rather than plug directly into a modem. And, the best virus defense is always the user. I've often said that, what comes home on the bottom of your shows depends on where you went for a walk. There are places one should not be lured. Some are obvious and some are not. There are habits to avoid such as clicking on e-mail links and attachments from folks you don't know or barely know. Use a secure browser and set it to empty its cache when you exit.

Blue Screen - Red screen

Been getting quite a few lockups as of late

Sometimes i will get a Windows Bluescreen of depth

with reference to nvlddmk.sys

Some times i will get a plain blue screen lockup ( from what looks like the graphics card ) . Have to reboot as the screen turns off

Some times will also get a red screen lockup ( from what looks like the graphics card ) . Have to reboot as the screen turns off

Had the graphics card replaced on monday

It is very infrequent and happens randomly . I dont game on the laptop and this is normally when in photoshop and playing online radio .

Does this sound like a graphics card issue ?

I do notice my fans come on after i have rebooted but the cpu temps seem ok..

I have a 260 Gtx btw

Recently replaced

processor = 920xm

Memory has been replaced with 2x corsair 4gb sticks

CD drive has been replaced with a 500gb HDD caddy

graphics card was replaced earlier this week due to these problems !

I was running the latest version of the drivers ( which i have now upgraded today with the newest )

Has any one got a link to some drivers that are known to work ok ?

I had a similar problem with my 260m. Dell replaced my video card 3 times, the heat sink twice, and the motherboard once. I also reformatted my hard drive. And I still had BSOD, locked up red screens, and driver timeout errors. I searched google for this problem, and got a ton of hits, using the exact phrase noted in the error message.

It's a known issue with the 260m. Alot of people complain about it, but no resolution has been found. I tried the dell drivers on their support site, older drivers posted by members here, and the newest drivers on nvidia's site, but the intermittent problem kept occuring.

Dell sent me a new, well refurbished , laptop, with the 5850 card instead. Just received it, no problems yet. I would rather them have sent me one with the new 460, but they didn't. Good luck.

Reply 3 : Blue Screen - Red screen

tbh i wouldnt have minded so much if i 100% new it was the graphics card as i would just buy a replacement .

I dont want to spend out if it does not solve the problem

Thanks for the reply btw

If it's still under warrranty, Dell will make it right. If it's isn't , then maybe someone with more knowledge than me will be able to guide you better, before you plunk down your hard earned dollars. I was sure it was a video card issue with my computer, and it was still under warranty.

I'm not sure if that would invalidate your warranty, but if you still have the old parts, you could always put them back in.

Need help and advice choosing laptop

I am getting a refurbished Alienware Laptop next week and have the choose of two.

Option 1:

Alienware M17x Nebula Red

Q9000 Intel Core2 Quad 2.00GHz (6MB Cache, 1066MHz FSB)

8GB (8192MB) DDR3 1333MHz

500GB Serial (SATA) 7200 RPM

2 x 1024MB nVidia GeForce GTX 260M SLI (Total 2GB)

Option 2:

Alienware M17x R2 Space Black

Intel Core i7-720QM Quad Core Mobile Processor 1.60GHz (Turbo up to 2.8GHz, 6MB Cache,1333MHz FSB)

6GB (6144MB) DDR3 1333MHz

500GB Serial (SATA) 7200 RPM

ATI Mobility RADEON HD 4870 Graphics with 1024MB RAM (GDDR3)

I think that the CPU in option 2 is significantly better than option 1. I dont think that I'll see much difference between 6 and 8gb of RAM. But which is the better GPU option? 2 GTX 260m in SLI or a single ATI 4870? I've read reports that SLI only works sometimes (i.e. with certain software). I will mainly be using the laptop for gaming (FM2011, Empire Total War, Dawn of War 2 etc).

Are the R2 laptops built better and last better?

Any help or advice much appreciated.

Reply 1 : Need help and advice choosing laptop

I'd choose the R2 and see if they would go to 4Gb RAM and give you the second 4870 in CrossFireX although the R1 isn't a bad configuration, I have an R1 and the setup is in my sig line.

Reply 2 : Need help and advice choosing laptop

Thanks for the response. I will check to see if I can make changes to spec and how much it woukd be. Both of these laptops cost 1200 and this is pretty much all my budget spent.

BD-P1600 Network Issues

Hi all,

Just purchased the BD-P1600 to use with my Netflix account. I am connecting through an ethernet connection. However, I can only get it to work when I disable the firewall on my Belkin router. When the firewall is enabled, Netflix doesn't work and the network test fails on the Gateway Ping test.

I don't want to disable my firewall to get this to work, so I'm not sure what other options I have. Using the wireless option would require a purchase of a device for it and would get the same results since it seems to be a router issue.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

Reply 1 : BD-P1600 Network Issues

Purplewin,

Perhaps allowing Netflix as an approved site in the router might help. I am not a master of networking, but you might try to cross-post this in the Networking forum as well.

I'll take a hack at this, and you can try (or the rest of the forum can laugh - one or the other)... grin

But with my router, typing in 192.168.1.1 gets me into the router, and I can set site allowances and restrictions. Maybe setting www.netflix.com with no restrictions would do the trick.

Now I'll step aside and hopefully a real expert on networking can assist.

Reply 2 : BD-P1600 Network Issues

I am having similar problems with a new BD-P1600.

I have DSL through Embarq. I hardwired the ethernet connection from a Netgear WPN824 router to the Blu-ray player.

Initially I had to disable my SPI firewall for it to work. I solved that problem by upgrading my router firmware.

Now the network connection seems to work intermittently for about a day at a time. When it stops working, the network test (in Setup) fails at test #3 the "gateway ping". Moving the ethernet plug to my laptop - the connection to the internet works fine. I can manually do a gateway ping from the laptop with no problem. Once it fails I am unable to make it work. Reseting everything seems to make no difference. Maybe it will work tomorrow.

I hope Samsung can give some advise ... when it's working, Netflix and Pandora are really neat features and one of the primary reasons I bought the unit.

Reply 3 : BD-P1600 Network Issues

I wish I could say I found a solution, but ultimately I decided to take the unit back to the store. I contacted both Samsung and Belkin and neither had a solution. Too bad, I really would have liked to have kept it.

Reply 4 : BD-P1600 Network Issues

Just bought BDP 1600 and LAN wireless to stream movies via Netflix. I think I'm putting in all the correct #'s for Wireless Network Set up but still not working. Any suggestions?

Reply 5 : BD-P1600 Network Issues

dezin_sense,

Are you also using the Apple wireless?

Reply 6 : BD-P1600 Network Issues

Yes, I'm connected through Apple Airport Express.

Reply 7 : BD-P1600 Network Issues

HD-Tech: Thanks for responding here to questions. I'm also trying to connect the 1600 up via Airport Express but having trouble. Ive got them connected via the Expresss ethernet port, but am lost with Samsungs poorly documented Network Setup: thought Id be able to find and select my network at Access Point under Wireless Network, but cant. I did get a MAC Access error notice which makes me think the 1600 at least recognized the network. Do I need to manually set IP address, etc? Do I need to use Aiport Utility to change config of Airport Express? Thanks for any help you can give!

Reply 8 : BD-P1600 Network Issues

I'm compiling information on the Airport routers. I'm not sure if they're compatible, but I'm trying to get information on this currently.

it can be done but I'm still not sure how. See comment here by Mike S:

This gives me hope though I'm still considering returning the 1600.

Thanks, HD-Tech, for following up.

Reply 10 : BD-P1600 Network Issues

Reply 11 : BD-P1600 Network Issues

I just purchased my BD-P1600 today 11/5/2009 and I was able to update the firmware with no issues. This is the first thing I did before I even tried my first disc. I did it the CD method for the first time. I used the instructions on the website and it worked without a hitch. Samsung should really put something in their manual about doing the first update of the Firmware. The reason I state this is that it mentions something about after you update your firmware for the first time from CD that you need to run through the steps again. After the first time you do not need to do that. My suspicion is that if you do it for the first time from the web that it does not completely load until the second load of the firmware is done. That could be the whole reason it is stuck on load.

Reply 12 : BD-P1600 Network Issues

As a follow up to my previous post...

I exchanged the BD-P1600 for a new one and everything is working great. It became apparent the ethernet port on the original unit was flaky. The new unit immediately lights the connection indicator on the router/hub when the power is turned on. The original one didn't.

It is also working with all normal settings through the DSL modem firewall and router firewall. I did have to update the router firmware. I also had Embarq update my network connection from an older PPPoE connection - don't know if that really mattered.

For reference, my network configuration is: Embarq DSL with a ZyXEL 660 modem (replaced an older 645) <--> Netgear RangeMax WPN824 version 1 router (with updated firmware) <--> 100ft cat6 patch cable <--> a hub (probably not needed) <--> patch cable to the unit.

With approximately 3meg internet download speed, the quality of the picture from Netflix is great with no delays.

Thumbs up to Samsung for their tech help in verifying the unit was faulty.

Reply 13 : BD-P1600 Network Issues

I too have had this problem w/ the 1600 and Belkin router. I believe the issue is with the router as I had similar issue with other wireless devices. (ex. Win XP computer connect wirelessly bo prob but a Vista Computer would not).

Anyway I turned off the Firewall and it worked fine...but who wants to turn off the firewall.
The only other option I see is that Belkin router(my model is F5D7230) allows you to put 1 IP address into their DMZ, basically a firewall passthrough for just that IP without turning off the firewall for any other computer.
This works for me as well.
I have no idea the possible consequences of opening up my BlueRay player to the internet w/o a firewall....can you hack a BP??

Anyway my next issues to tackle are:
Crappy picture ( I have 1.5G DSL and playback on a 60" Plasma...hmmm)
Oh, and a minor detail, no sound, only picture. I'll search for those issues in another forum but if anyone reads it here and has any thoughts let me know!

Reply 14 : BD-P1600 Network Issues

Oh yeah, looking at the Belkin bsecurity log it says "Blocked by DoS protection" when trying to test the 1600's connection and failing on the gateway ping, so it clearly erroneously sees the 1600 as something evil from the outside. Brilliant.

Reply 15 : BD-P1600 Network Issues

I've neglected to mention I'm using AIRPORT Express. Does that make a difference. I was told by my ISP I should set DHCP "ON" and DNS "AUTO", because Apple is providing me the "service" Is it Apple that screwing me up?

Reply 16 : BD-P1600 Network Issues

As far as I know it should work with DHCP "ON" and DNS "AUTO", as this is how it is intended.

Quick update, my connection eventually failed w/ the Belkin DMZ setting and I had to go back to just turning off the router's firewall.
From other posts I read this may not be a huge vulnerability unless you're running a server or something. Otherwise in the event of a DOS attack it would just shut down your modem.

Reply 17 : BD-P1600 Network Issues

Probably stating the obvious, but if your using DMZ through the router, you need a fixed IP. Otherwise when a different IP is given, the DMZ won't work. I would also recommend reserving the fixed IP in the router (based on the BP's mac address) to prevent one of your computers from being assigned that address and unknowingly opening that machine up as a DMZ.

Reply 18 : BD-P1600 Network Issues

Hi dezin_sense

It seems that we are in the very same boat you are.

If/when you come to some solution, would you be so kind as to let us know?

Many thanks.

Reply 19 : BD-P1600 Network Issues

pesp123,
Will keep you posted.
I did connect the Samsung BD-P1600 directly to an ethernet and worked just fine, but when I had to go to my computer to punch in the NetFlix ACTIVATE CODE...can't. DUH, I have no internet CONNECTION!

The whole point of buying the WIS09ABGN doggle is to go WIRELESS!
I'm on the verge of returning EVERYTHING...& canceling NetFlix.

Reply 20 : BD-P1600 Network Issues

pesp_123,
Had to do it....replaced my Airport Express and bought a NETGEAR wireless router. EVERYTHING works.

I'm streaming Netflix and listening to Pandora, just too bad my Airport Express has now become obsolete.

Good luck.

Reply 21 : BD-P1600 Network Issues

We connected but only after much gnashing of teeth and tearing of hair!

1. We traded our P1600 for the P3600 (built in wireless hardware, no need for the dongle dood-dad; in terms of cost, from B and H, we got the P3600 for about the same as P1600 plus the dongle would have cost. Note that the P3600 comes with 1 gig built-in, which the P1600 does not.
2. We spent pretty much 6 hours f'ing around and calling Samsung ... and then trying pretty much every configuration possible until, voila, we're connected through our local wireless "secure" network.

FYI, what we learned through our techno-retarded agony:
A. Samsung "Level 2" tech told us that the network name cannot contain special characters or spaces.
B. DHCP is set to "on"
C. Our "Gateway" number is the same as our "DNS" number.

Reply 22 : BD-P1600 Network Issues

So should i assume the wireless will not work with the -1600?
and what you wrote here wouldn't apply to the 1600?

C. Our "Gateway" number is the same as our "DNS" number

Dezin or anyone else with a potential answer,

Did you get the samsung wireless usb adapter to work with your 1600? I run a sonicwall TZ180 wireless and cannot get the 1600 to pass the ping test. If I connect with the wired connection, it works just fine, passes through the firewall without any issues. I also tried a belken wireless gaming adapter and it to fails the ping test. I have been using dhcp on and dns auto.

Reply 24 : BD-P1600 Network Issues

delahund,
Yes I was able to make it work. My problem, I think, was that I was using the Apple Airport Express. I bought a Netgear Wireless router upgraded the firmware (MUST upgrade firmware, it wasn't working at first until I did that), keep the setting you have (DHCP on & HNS auto) and EVERYTHING should work PERFECTLY. My only regret is that my Apple Airport has become obsolete. Good luck.

Reply 25 : BD-P1600 Network Issues

It took a while but I connected the 1600 via ethernet to an Airport Express. Two key things, one on the Apple side, one on Samsung. First, the Express must be the 802.11n model, for it allows Ethernet out. Secondand this is weirdunder the Network section of the Samsung 1600's Setup menu, I selected "Cable" rather than "Wireless." Totally counter-intuitive, unless you figure a) "Wireless" refers to the Samsung wireless dongle only; and b) "Cable" must really mean "ethernet," since the 1600 has no co-axil cable jackor perhaps it does mean "cable" as my wireless network gets its DSL via cable, but so would the Samsung dongle if I had gone that way. In any case, the networking of the Samsung needs to be much better documented (so too the Airport Express).

Reply 26 : BD-P1600 Network Issues

I know this post is months old, but I just spent three hours trying every possible configuration until I finally got it to work, and I wanted to post my results.

Samsung BD-P1590
Ethernet Cable from BD Player to
Comcast internet modem
Ethernet Cable from Comcast internet modem to
Airport Extreme router

What I had to do was set:
DHCP: OFF
IP ADDRESS: found in Airport Admin Utility: Internet tab
SUBNET MASK: found in Airport Admin Utility: Internet tab
GATEWAY: same number as IP address
DNS: Manual
Primary DNS: found in Airport Admin Utility: Internet tab (greyed out number to the right of the blank text box labeled DNS servers)

When I attempted to connect to the network, I failed the INTERNET SERVICE TEST. I backed out of the network connection test and went back to my cable settings.

I changed DHCP to ON and DNS to Auto, but it still showed my previously entered numbers, just greyed out.

I tried the network connection test again and PASSED!

It will NOT work if I use the default 0s when I select DHCP on and DNS auto.

I hope this helps someone in the future.

OMG,

After spending numerous hours today trying to hook up my Blu Ray and reading all the posts. I have finally gotten my working and thought I would share how I did it. (It took a combination of several different suggestions from everyone, so thanks to all of you).

First this is my wireless set up

Comcast Provider
Linksys router

I did the following

Turned off my Firewall (clicked on wireless network icon on bottom right hand of computer)

Changed the setting DHCP to manual and inputted my IP and Gateway address (I obtained that information by right clicking on my wireless icon on the bottom right of my computer). Being very specific for those that are not computer savvy (which I am not)

Then I clicked on Access Point (and chose my home internet). I selected WEP (I selected that since the information from my wireless company indicated that is what I had-same place as information for IP address). I had to then input my 26 digit encryption key. (which I got when I set up system.

I saved everything and ran the network connection test and passed everything (including the Ping test) EXCEPT for the internet service test.

I then went back to Wireless Network (in the set up screen) and changed the DHCP to On (which changed the DNS to auto) and saved. Went back to Network Connection Test and reran and it shows CONNECTED!

I then went back in and turned on my Firewall and reran network connection test and it show "Network operating properly".

I am not sure that this will help anyone but after working on this for 3 hours (and reading and trying all the posts). It appeared to me that these were the common corrections that seemed to work on most so I just put them together and they fixed both problems.

I am not very computer savvy but was determined to not let this "glitch" beat me. I hope others find this information useful.

I am not ready to connect to Netflix, etc.

Sorry so detailed but thought others might appreciate the step by step instructions on how I succeeded!

Good Luck

I am convinced the WIRELESS NETWORKK doesn't work at all on the BD-P1600. I bought the unit at BEST BUY as well as the $80 USB STICK (ridiculous!!!!0 and after hours of not being able to connect-I am using an Apple Airport Base Express station-the Samsung recognized it but when i put in the password it didn't it didn't connect. AFter calls to SAMSUNG who told me the unit won't recognize 'numbers' as a name for the network-i changed my network to a real name-it DID recognize it but when i entered the password it would NOT connect. After hours of being on the phoen with 5 different 'tech) people at SAMSUNG-3 who hung up on me because they couldn't help and got frustrated and after doing everything they said it STILL wouldn't connect-I repeat-it DID recognize my network name but there was a LOCK on it and when i tried to enter the password to connect it WOULDN'T -TIME AFTER TIME AFTER TIME OUT!
After reading the many reports from both MAC & PC users i am convinced their WIRELESS NETWORK DOESN'T WORK AT ALL!!!!

Reply 29 : BD-P1600 Network Issues

Did you read all the posts above? Most of the members got it working in the end. So your thought of it not working at all must be wrong.

If you can't get it working, return it or get a tech from the shop to set it up. If he can't either, they'll surely agree to returning. It seems to be a difficult job anyway.

R1 users, i need you attention please

Dear R1 owners, I would like to ask you to spend some time on my issue.

Could you please follow this guide and report on result:

- switch to nvidia mode

- open this picture fullscreen and look carefully on laptop's screen

what anti-virus should we have?

I work for a small business company. My boss has different brands of anti-viruses on the computers. Now they are all home versions. Should we be using home or small business anti-virus? The computers are used like a home computer. We do have company files on a network, but those are kept on an external hard drive.

Reply 1 : what anti-virus should we have?

why would you want to change? If they are being used like home computers then I see no need for any corporate type of antivirus. "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" as the saying goes.

Reply 2 : what anti-virus should we have?

If these AV products are paid versions....I don't see a problem.

If these AV products are free versions....you might be saying your boss is a crook.

Reply 3 : what anti-virus should we have?

I thought a small business computer had to have small business anti-virus software. I think i read it in the fine print of the regular software. We have paid versions of anti-virus software. I don't like the brands. Some have 1 has x other 3 have y brand and five has none yet new computer in office.

Reply 4 : what anti-virus should we have?

fine print. You need to read that and also the features on each one and decide for yourself which would suit the business the best. Every business is different and has different needs. If you have all paid versions, I doubt that you are breaking any of their rules using them in a business. Most of the free ones have fine print and you should not use them for a business though.

Reply 5 : what anti-virus should we have?

"I don't like the brands".......tough.

When you become the BOSS you can change that.

If your BOSS wants to buy 10 different AV products to fit on the machines that's his/her business........it's called PERKS.

If your BOSS wants to buy one AV and a license to install it on 10 machines....save a buck...that's his/her business.

Random crashes with Snow Leopard and DigiCoreAudio Manager

Hi all,

I'm trying to help someone whose English is not good.
He has an Intel Mac running Snow Leopard OSX 10.6.6 (according to the crash report), although uname -a gives
Code:
Darwin-ordinateur-de-apple.local 10.6.0 Darwin Kernel Version 10.6.0: Wed Nov 10 18:13:17 PST 2010; root:xnu-1504.9.26~3/RELEASE_I386 i386

He uses LogicPro 9, and DigiCoreAudio v. 8.0.3
Connected via firewire is a Digi 002 running ProTools.
All ran as merry as a marriage bell like this until the upgrade to Snow Leopard, which he did using the 29 euro upgrade, not the "box set".
He now has random crashes - the system will run for a while, then crash.
He has sent me a PDF of a crash report which I don't know how to attach on this forum; it gives:
Exception Type: EXC_BAD_ACCESS (SIGBUS)
Exception Codes: KERN_PROTECTION_FAILURE at 0x0000000000000000
Crashed Thread: 0 Dispatch queue: com.apple.main-thread

From what follows this, it seems that DigiCore Audio Manager starts four times just before things grind to a halt.
Is anyone else using this setup? Any ideas?

Reply 1 : Random crashes with Snow Leopard and DigiCoreAudio Manager

My first thought would be that the person has some bad RAM. It's also possible that the firewire connected device has gone bad. It also couldn't hurt to check the website of the maker of the device and software to see if there are any known issues with 10.6.6. A lot of times "specialty" apps tend to be horribly written and are incredibly fragile so that seemingly simple changes will cause them to break. Since there's little to no competition in their particular niche, and they tend to have you because of the amount of money you've already sunk into their product, there's little to no incentive to really improve the software in any substantial way.

Reply 2 : Random crashes with Snow Leopard and DigiCoreAudio Manager

Thanks for the reply.
I don't think it's a hardware problem. Firmware sounds more likely, but it worked fine with Tiger, apparently. I've had a look at the website, as far as I could make out it's supposed to work with 10.6.6; but since I'm not familiar with the device or the software, and he's 400 km away, and his hand-waving explanations are sometimes a bit hard to follow over the phone . . .
I was hoping to get someone (a musician, it's music stuff) who uses the same equipment and could say either "works for me" or "everyone has this problem, you need to install foobar and use a left-footed mouse" or some such.
Sorry for the slow reply, I had trouble logging in.

Reply 3 : Random crashes with Snow Leopard and DigiCoreAudio Manager

Bad RAM definitely

Reply 4 : Random crashes with Snow Leopard and DigiCoreAudio Manager

Thanks.
I've passed on the content of both posts to the proud owner.
Personally I don't _think_ it's hardware because 1 it has only happened since the upgrade to 10.6.6, and 2 I don't think he has any problems with other software.
I've sent him an email asking him to confirm this, and asking if he can get hold of some other RAM to try and eliminate the possibility.

Reply 5 : Random crashes with Snow Leopard and DigiCoreAudio Manager

Bad RAM can have many very strange side effects. Sometimes you will have only one program that ever seems to crash as a result of the bad RAM, and all kinds of other bizarre things.

It might not be a bad idea to also just try replacing the firewire cable. Fairly cheap and easy to do, and never hurts to have a spare around either. Monoprice.com is a great place for all your cable buying needs assuming they're in the US. Not sure about other countries.

Reply 6 : Random crashes with Snow Leopard and DigiCoreAudio Manager

>Bad RAM can have many very strange side effects. Sometimes you will >have only one program that ever seems to crash as a result of the >bad RAM, and all kinds of other bizarre things.

I've suggested to him that he try to get hold of some other RAM and another firewire cable in order to eliminate these two possibilities.
There's also some stuff on the Avid (ProTools) English site which doesn't appear in other languages, so I've sent him that too, as I still think it's more likely to be a compatibility/bug/configuration issue.
Thanks for your help, I do appreciate it.

Reply 7 : Random crashes with Snow Leopard and DigiCoreAudio Manager

I'm getting a similar error with Android's emulator crashing at a certain point, which never happened before. I see there is an OS X 10.6.7 update, perhaps it will be fixed.

as i try to turn on my ibook g4 i get this folder sign and a blinking '?' and apple finder logo over that folder. i know the path to the system folder is corrupted and i need to restore this computer. I tried to restore the computer with a MBP restore dvd but it didnt wor.

anyone can provide me with a link to get mac ox x tiger classic so that i can restore this ibook.

Reply 1 : ibook g4 not booting

I suggest that you either contact Apple and see if they can send you a Mac OS X Tiger DVD or you find one for sale on a site such as eBay. You aren't going to find a link here to download OS X Tiger as that goes against forum rules.

Video Editing

The major things I do with my laptop is edit photos, and editing videos.

I currently use Adobe Premiere, Adobe After Effects, Corel VideoStudio Pro X4, Adobe Photoshop, and Adobe Lightroom.

My current specs are:
 • Intel Core i7-720QM
 • ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5730
 • 17.3" 900p Screen
 • 4GB RAM
 • 500GB HDD
This laptop cost me around $1200.

I'm curious if I should keep my current laptop or move to an Apple so I can use iMovie, Final Cut, etc. I'm thinking about keeping my current laptop or switching to an Apple MacBook Pro 13" for specs around $1200 or less.

Is iMovie, Final Cut, and so on worth it? It seems like my specs are way better than the MacBook Pro but if it can handle video editing and photo editing better is what I'm wondering about.

Reply 1 : Video Editing

You will have to invest a lot of money to switch. iMovie is free with a new Mac but really a low end fun consumer product compared t the Adobe programs you are currently using. Final cut is pretty good but not better than the Adobe programs your using. Of course the Adobe programs are also available for OSX but I think you would need to but them again in the Mac version.

The MBP 13" will not perform better than your current system. Also the low resolution screen will not be ideal for video editing. I would recommend you get the MBP 15" with the high res option. If it is too expensive I would stick with what you are currently using.

You would have to invest into a new licence to use Adobe in Mac OS.

What's wrong with your current laptop. The specs are awesome. Instead of buying another laptop I would suggest to possibly upgrade your HDD to an SDD one. They are a bit expensive but much faster. Then use your old 500GB HDD for backup.

Reply 3 : Video Editing

If you call Adobe, they will often do a one time license change from Windows to Mac, without forcing you to re-buy things... always worth a shot.

Reply 4 : Video Editing

Make the decision based on software. If you're happy using what you're using, keep the Windows machine because it'll all run on Windows.

If you try Final Cut (& I mean try it out, not spend a few grand on a Mac and a copy of it just to see whether you like it, as you seem to be proposing here!!) and decide you can't live without it - some people do, some people prefer Premiere or Avid or Vegas or whatever - then take a proper look into the costs of getting a Mac.

But at the moment you seem to be considering spending a huge amount of money changing your whole workflow and tools over because you heard it might be better, without any real research as to whether it will suit the way you work.

Reply 5 : Video Editing

Wait for FCP upgrade if you want to go that route. There were plenty of bugs in last version and we are waiting to see what surprises are in the next one, which is rumored to come out soon.

Reply 6 : Video Editing

Final cut and premier pro were designed by the same lead designer. They are almost identical in operation. Some of the effects and filters are different, but even the GUI is so close you can go back and forth between the two with 0 learning curve.

Your laptop's specs are quite nice. Switching is not something i can recommend for you.

In a few years once your laptop dies or becomes long in the tooth you may consider switching again. But right now it's just money down the drain IMO.

I use adobe programs daily including Premier Pro. In University I had to use final cut on the lab computers. I speak from experience.

As previously pointed out, you are going to get a weaker system (in terms of multi-tasking and graphical performance) if you spend $1200 on a MacBook Pro (MBP) now. The dual-core Core i5 processor in the 13" MBP performs better than the i7 you are currently using when not multi-tasking but it is weaker by the time you add in running other programs at once (due to the nature of dual-core hyper threaded processors compared to quad-core hyper threaded chips).

All-in-all, you would have to spend much more money to not only buy a new MBP with a higher resolution display (which is required for video editing) along with video editing software. You could easily spend over $3000 to do all of this just so you could switch platforms. It would have been better for you to start out using a MBP back when you purchased your current notebook (though it would have been more than $1200). It is pretty much too late to switch now for that type of budget.

Instead, there are other things you can do that will increase performance of your notebook. Upgrade the RAM to its maximum capacity (likely 8GB, that will cost you ~$85), slap in a fast SSD drive that will house Windows and all of your installed programs, and go with an external monitor if you want a higher resolution display when you are docked at home. You could do all of that for around $500-$600 depending on the monitor and SSD drive you buy.

Right now, there is absolutely no reason for you to switch unless running Mac OS X specific software is required. I recently switched to Mac OS X and it was rather expensive. Not only was my MBP $1400 ($1500 with taxes) but I had to buy Microsoft Office, AutoCAD, Parallels, MATLAB, and a Windows 7 license so I could run it under Parallels in OS X giving me access to a few Windows only programs. Luckily my university book store was selling Office for $5, AutoCAD for $10, MATLAB for $20, Parallels for $5, and Windows 7 Ultimate x64 for $7. Otherwise I don't think I could have afforded to switch platforms.

Shadowdare, is that an Asus? If it is the specs are exactly like mine and I've done amazing things with the laptop. My advice to you is do what I'm doing. Use the laptop to its fullest use (warranty is up etc.) and then when you are going to buy a new laptop, make it a Mac, technologies by then will be much better and the ones they are selling now may be able to get at refurbished prices.

The only thing my laptop lacks is battery life (it has about 2 hours), however, I'm considering just using a tablet (Playbook or IPAD) if I need anything longer than a few hours battery life for now.

KornChild....where is your uni book store? Those are some very good prices that I would love.

Which is a better spell-check for IE9?

Hello:

Just wanted to know - by user experience - which is a better (more fluid, seamless, efficient but unobtrusive) spell checker for IE9?

Currently, I use Speckie. It's OK. I believe there is another app called ieSpell or something like that.

Thanks in advance.

Reply 1 : Which is a better spell-check for IE9?

The Sage and WordWeb will both do in-line spell check for many programs including IE.

Thanks. But I have never even heard of these!!! Can you post links? In the meantime, I'll search online.

Edit: This is regarding WordWeb and is from the FAQ on their site:

WordWeb is not a spell checker, though it will suggest alternatives to common misspellings. You cannot use it to spellcheck documents.

i have used ieSpell for years

does the job great

Reply 4 : Which is a better spell-check for IE9?

I've used IEspell for quite a few years and only recently started using Speckie and there's no comparison between the two; IEspell feels like a program for Win 95 in comparison. Speckie is also fully supported in IE9 where IEspell I found was very buggy.

Reply 5 : Which is a better spell-check for IE9?

if you want to go one step further you could use a autohotkey script that automatically changes words when you misspell them... but it would require a little work to set up

Problem burning audio CDs

I have always had a problem burning Audio CDs and getting the tracks to burn in the order I arranged them. I am not sure why this happens. I have used different burning software, tried changing the names of the tracks to numbers (i.e. 1, 2, 3, 4,) and other things to force the tracks to be burned in the order I want. No matter what I do it appears that there is some hidden algorithm that is used to decide how the tracks are burned on the CD. Can someone explain this to me?

Unexpected quits from safari and itunes

I replaced my WD Scorpio black with a Seagate Momentus XT hybrid drive, and installed an 8 GB kit into my revision 5.1 unibody MBP 2.53 ghz.

I did a fresh install of Snow Leopard, did all my updates, installed the latest Adobe flash plugin, moved over my important data. Good to go. Or not...

Safari quits ALL THE TIME...every time I visit my site for watching TV it quits unexpectedly. I know the whole Flash plugin story jibberish but prior to my HD and Ram upgrades this rarely occurred! Now, every single time I go that site, or any flash based site it WILL freeze and quit.

iTunes is the same story. It quits unexpectedly every single time I open it. It will play music for a while, then quit by itself 'unexpectedly'.

This is making me lose faith in the OSX stability. The thing that bothers me the most is that before I did the upgrades this never happened. No freezing, no quitting unexpectedly etc etc...

What could be going on?

First Model Of The Unibody MBP 13"

When it was released?

And what was the specifications of it?

I am planning on a MBP 13" for web browsing and multimedia (except gaming).

Reply 1 : First Model Of The Unibody MBP 13"

The first unibody MBP was released in late 2008 and was at 15" only. The first unibody 13" MBP was released in mid 2009 and had varying specs. The essentially had either a 2.26GHz or 2.53GHz Core 2 Duo, 2GB or 4GB of RAM (maybe just 2GB), Nvidia GeForce 9400M IGP, a glossy glass covered display, and varying hard drive size options. You can see the timeline of the MBP releases on the Wikipedia page located here.

I have read that before posting, but I got confused at a Macbook with unibody re-branded later as MBP.

Does anybody sells it today as new/refurbished?

Reply 3 : First Model Of The Unibody MBP 13"

The only difference between the original launch of the 13" Alu Macbook in Oct 08 and the rebadged 13" alu MBP was the cpu bumps from 2.0/2.4 to 2.26/2.53. Everything else remained the same.

It's been 2.5 years since release, so there aren't any new ones around unless they're sitting on eBay (and I doubt that someone would have had a 13" MB in a box on a shelf for that long). Apple refurbs only go back to the previous model release, so we're also well past the timeline.

Your best option if you want to be inexpensive/cheap is to look on the used market, but the early ones (like mine) are still selling for $600-900 on eBay depending on specs and accessories, and the battery may or not need replacement due to age and use.

It was very simple and easy to do, so I was very dismayed when I asked my husband
to view it on his PC, that it doesn't show anything.
Since my PC showed a list of everything I had copied onto the CD-Rom, I inserted into my disk drive. I could tell that something was wrong, when it made running noises for too long.
The result was that Internet Explorer was not responding and I had to restart the PC.
A second try produced the same result.
My PC is a xps420 dell and I have little experience copying images to a CD.
I was given the CDR, 40X, 80min 700 mb, Audiobahn Music in the Fast Lane
to copy images onto for a fellow garden club member.
What did I do wrong? It seemed so easy.

Reply 1 : Cannot read CD-Rom content

It's basically this.. The "Packet Writing" software which formats the CD/DVD disc to allow the drag/drop is a little glitchy.. First, the type you have on your computer may not be the same format type on someone else's computer.. As such, they won't be able to read a formatted disc from your machine. In addition, the packet writing/formatting process isn't reliable at all. Commonly, you'll see the new files for a while, then the next time you place it in your DVD/CD drive, it won't read it. It's why we don't use packet writing software to backup important files.. It's just not reliable.

So, it order to do what you want, the best procedure is to perform a tradition data disc "finalized/closed" burn of the data you want to pass along.. A little obscure is the ability of CD-RW/DVD-RW discs (rewritable) disc to perform this "finalized/closed" burn repeatedly.. With one RW disc, you can burn the data onto the disc, finalize/close it, use the disc for a while, and when you're ready to place new information on the disc, use the "Erase" option on your burning software, then perform a new traditional burn..

Hope this helps.

Grif

Thanks so much for your quick reply. I have my own CD-RW disks and will try this tomorrow, I'm sure with more luck.
It was just too easy; why is such a seemingly useless function even available.
I wasted quite a bit of time doing this and having my PC freeze up twice; so frustrating!
Well, I am happy there is CNet and it's terrific forum participants.
Because of you, my time wasn't really wasted, but I learned to do things the right way.

Need Help with Creating an Advertising Website

Hi,

I'm trying to create a advertising website and I don't know where to begin. I want to know what program I can find and website I can use to create pictures and links. Are there any suggestions? I would like to keep it very inexpensive.

Reply 1 : Need Help with Creating an Advertising Website

Can you provide more information on exactly what type of site you need? What are you trying to advertise or are you trying to sell advertising?

Reply 2 : Need Help with Creating an Advertising Website

thanks for the response. I'm just trying to get companies to advertise on my website for a low fee.

Reply 3 : Need Help with Creating an Advertising Website

You need to give them a reason to advertise on your site first.

Advertisers want to know how many people actually visit your site. Once you have created content and have visitors, then you can work on getting advertisers.

If you want to start with advertisers look at affiliate programs like cj.com, linkshare.com, amazon.com (link at bottom of screen) and google.com/adsense

Once these programs are running then you can look to run your own banner program, and there are many scripts out there that you can get to run them.

97 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo keep dying upon ignition

When I start the car it will usually die within a few seconds, but the check engine light doesn't stay on. I'll wait a few minutes and re-start it up; it will idle a little rough and then be ready to go, but it might still die when backing up.
Before this started happening daily, I had a new battery put in, as well as the fuel pump changed, and an O2 sensor changed. So my mechanic said it could be a few things: the coil, the fact that my alarm/remote start doesn't work anymore, or the computer. He changed the coil, we had the alarm/rem. start removed and are in the process of looking for a reconditioned computer... anything else that it could be??
and can a computer from a different (but close) year/model still be re-programmed for my car?? I'm sorry, I don't know the engine size, but it's only a 2-wheel drive...

Reply 1 : 97 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo keep dying upon ignition

I have a 96 Jeep grand Cherokee... 4.0L 4x2 w/ the same problem... w/ 202,000 miles. <Amen> and it's been recently that i've been working through this problem as well, so i can definitely feel for what you're saying...

so far i've changed the Throttle Position Sensor, fuel pump, fuel filter, i have taken out the catalytic converter, both Oxygen sensors, the engine wire harness, the PCM, and ignition coil, camshaft position sensor, crankshaft sensor, the rotor, distributor cap, ignition wires and spark plugs. I have totally run out of ideas. I have some of the diagnostic manuals for the GC and tried following the wiring schematics. There is a grey/white wire that goes from the coil to the PCM, a dark green/orange wire that goes from the PCM to the ASD relay, according to the schematics, these wires are linked to the Primary Coil#1 code. i could see how that could work out w/ just placing a wire directly from the Coil to the PCM, but i've replaced the engine wire harnes and i cant imagine how i could still be in the same scenario.

Just was wondering if anyone had tried to go through the ASD relay route and see how that worked out for them...

Reply 2 : 97 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo keep dying upon ignition

Reply 3 : 97 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo keep dying upon ignition

I think you have done a lot of work already for nothing. As you've found out..
Get your mechanic to check the fuel pressure from the fuel pump. The fuel pump could be faulty or the fuel filter could need replacing.
That would have been the first thing I would have checked...
Maybe your mechanic already did check it but, to me, thats what it sounds like.
And by the way, I thought all Jeeps were 4 wheel drive..

Reply 4 : 97 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo keep dying upon ignition

hey there,
we've already replaced the fuel pump... still having the same problem. The jeep broke again twice while I was driving to work on Monday. This time the check engine light stayed on and I was able to check the code. It was a 14, MAP sensor too high or too low. Took it to a little mechanic and he said he doesn't have the tools to check the ohmmeter readings... so we barely took the jeep today to another mechanic to see what the deal is. I'll keep ya'll updated.

I have a Wrangler TJ 4.0 that my dad got from a salvage yard. It ran fine when we first got it, but it had been wrecked. We got the body and everything fixed. When we went to start it it ran for a second and then died. It wouldn't start after that, only turn over. I went to a junk yard and got a pcm off of another 97 TJ and now it runs for a couple seconds and then dies. I'm in automotive classes in college and me, some of the other students, and my instructor have gone through it and can't figure it out. We called the dealer and they said it sounds like the vehicle theft security system. If any one else knows any thing it might be, I'd appreciate it.

Reply 6 : 97 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo keep dying upon ignition

Just check that the Fuel pump runs for a few seconds after switching the ignition on. Check for spark while turning the motor over. Check that the ASD Relay (if it's got one) hasn't been tripped. It's hard to know whats wrong without looking at it. But there's a few pointers. It could be the Anti-Theft. Have you got the remote keypad for the Vehicle?
After checking the above, get back to me..
Seeya.

'97 Grand Cherokee, 135,000 miles

Various warning lights
Power comes on at night
Instrument cluster & gages haywire
Stalling
Dead battery overnight
Feedback in speakers
Repeatedly blown 20A fuse on engine fuse block
Turns over, but now won't catch

Replaced: Ignition switch & ignition cylinder block, cam sensor, throttle position sensor.

Tried: new battery, unplugging PCM computer, checked all fuses.

And the alternator checked out all right.

Any ideas?...the dealer in stumped.

Reply 8 : 97 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo keep dying upon ignition

Here are the things I would check.

If the battery is going flat overnight, I would be checking for a shorted Diode in the Alternator Rectifier. The Alternator can still show that it's charging ok but the Battery would be discharging back though the Alternator. This can also cause power to be supplied back through the System. This can also cause the fuse to blow.

Check all Earth Connections from the battery to the Body and chassis.

Check all the connections at the mutlti plug under the dash. This can cause the guages and stereo to play up.

One thing that points to a bad earth is you say that you get feedback from the stereo. That sure sounds like a bad earth to me. Although, Low battery Voltage could also cause this problem.

You've probably tried this already, but, try fully charging the battery and put it back in the car and see what happens.

I hope something I've mentioned Helps with your problem.

Let me know how you get on. If I think of anything else, I'll let you know.

RE: Haywire. If things act like they are possesed, try a new ECM (PCM). Replaced mine, fixed. They aren't cheap, and they need to match your vehicle quite specifically, so check the number on your unit when ordering. It's a 15 minute swap at most. OEM preferred, but they can be reprogrammed too. (Get one with a warranty, I've heard stories of people going through one or two refurbs before getting one that worked properly). Good luck!

Can you tell me where the ECM for the 97 is located? Took to shop they sd its the ECM and gave me the numbers to that ECM. How do I change this? Is there a way to test the ECM?

I HAVE 1997 JGC THAT THAT RUNS A FEW SECONDS AFTER STARTING AND CUTS OFF. STARTED AFTER PUTTING MY COMPUTER IN ANOTHER JEEP HAVING HAVING STALLING PROBLEMS. MY COMPUTER FIXED OTHER JEEP.SO WEGOT A NEW COMPUTER AND FIXED OTHER JEEP. MINE STILL NOT FIXED.

the anti theft had a glitch

Reply 15 : 97 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo keep dying upon ignition

Hi, I hope it stays fixed but for a glitch to be fixed by reflashing the ECU sounds a bit odd to me. I've now got a Diesel JEEP. I love the economy and the power is great from that little 2.5l motor. I see that this one has the I.D.Key system and apparently you can program the new keys to the ECU fairly easily.

So what you're saying is the car was running fine and then just out of the blue it started to run for a few seconds and then cut out? If that's the case it sure sounds like a security key problem was the culprit but I just can't get my head around why it would just do that out of the blue. Anyhow,I'm really happy it's going again and good luck for the future. Seeya.

Reply 16 : 97 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo keep dying upon ignition

I noticed that you have a diesel engine.
I have a '97 Diesel and was wondering if you knew whether I can take a engine wiring harness from a US produced gas model and replace. Are they the same?

As for jeep's running and stalling after a few seconds, my jeep is the same, however, if you have a remote to unlock doors, you must use this to disable the security feature, which basically cuts off the fuel supply after approx. 3-4 seconds. The car will start, but definitely cut off if the unlock button isn't pushed, in all cirucumstances e.g. even if car was already unlocked.

Reply 17 : 97 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo keep dying upon ignition

Hi,
Unfortunately the wiring harnesses are completly different. The Diesel has a lot of different features compared to the Petrol Equivelent. Just one example is the Glow plugs. Gas ones don't have 'em. My Cherokee has 2 ECU's also. One under the hood and one under the dash. The one under the Dash is for the Fuel Injector Pump.
Sounds like you have a weird problem. My 99 jeep has a transponder in the Key. The Ignition reads the key before it disables the Security System. I don't know how much different the 97 would be to the 99.
As a matter of interest, Why do you think your wiring Harness is at fault?

Reply 18 : 97 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo keep dying upon ignition

Hi, thanks for that info. My mistake earlier, mine is a '97.
The 2 reasons for thinking the wiring harness, my mechanic showed me some pretty nasty pics and of course the harness itself and secondly it started smoking about 3 days after getting it out of the shop. Hasn't worked for months.
Have to order the harness from Germany, unless you have any other suggestions?

actually that sounds right on. i'm gonna pay the 1/2 hour of labor at the dealer and do the same thing...b/c there was an update to the PCM software since they came out. otherwise, that refurb PCM i bought from that shady miami co. on e-bay is either sending me another PCM or the "tech" is gonna tell me where the phantom short or bad ground is just by cracking it open. huh? is that possible or are they gonna try to sell me something else? i'll sign back in when i get a helpful update. and p.s. - i've tracked this problem all the way back to the year 2001 on other boards. so, lets see...started several years after the internet got big, and no one has ever solved it and 2005/6 chrysler owners are still posting the same glitch. hmmm, sounds fun. again...the best advice still stands - fix it and sell it.

Reply 21 : 97 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo keep dying upon ignition

Hi, trevTaylor, You mention in your previous post that the 20A fuse kept blowing. Flashing the ECU won't fix that. Did you ever find out what was causing that? Also, the radio, did you find the problem with that Also?

Reply 22 : 97 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo keep dying upon ignition

PCM i bought from that shady miami co. on e-bay, dont trust that company i paid for a new pcm from them 300 dollars, when i got it , it was a old rebuilt , and thay wont give me back my money , i sent it back and its been 2 months now and no refund , please dont buy from thismiami base co, on ebay there crooks

Reply 23 : 97 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo keep dying upon ignition

Caught your post and wanted to chime in... Hate to tell you but they are all old PCM's at $300.00 that are reflashed... new ones start around $700/$800.00 from Jeep... If you don't believe me... stop and read all bloggs from many different sources... It's all the same story.

Now is the time to bend over and say thank you and can I have another one please... They got us coming and going!

before finalizing... make sure they match your needs to your car... read other posts... Vin # ETC...

good luck!

i bought the pcm from this dealer in miami sold on ebay , by the bigest dealer on ebay a brand new pcm he advertised as new , and when i received it it was a old rebuilt, he said it was flashed with all of the data , of course it didnt work , it was just a old piece of junk , iam just warning every one not to buy the junk on ebay that hes selling , if he crooked me he will crooked you , i still haven got back one cent, the best thing when you have a major problem with your jeep is not to spend anything on it and just sell it to the junk yard , i spent thousands of dollars now and still wont start

I have a 96 JGC Limited with 116,000 miles. One morning it decided it wasn't gonna stay running after it started, I had to keep my foot on the gas to keep the idel up. It does this on /off after sitting all night, or having not been driven all day. It also started to re-set all electrical inside the Jeep, kinda like the battery was unplugged, also will not turn over, gives me a clicking sound like the battery or ignition is shot. I have had the battery tested and it is fine. I found I can by-pass this by turning the key in the on position 3 times before I start the Jeep and 9 times out of 10 it turns over fine and will run perfectly. I am gettign the run around with the fuel sensors, fuel pump, etc. It's frusterating to know all of us are having the same problem, yet when we take it somewhere no one knows what the problem is.

Reply 26 : 97 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo keep dying upon ignition

Nicole I have been having the exact same problem you described for months. After I received an oil change it stopped happening for about month and the problem is starting back up again. I would like to know if you finally had your problem resolved or still have the vehicle.

Reply 27 : 97 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo keep dying upon ignition

Another possiblity to a no-start/stalling solution is to check the ASD (Automatic Shut Down) fuse in the egnine compartment fuse block. This circuit has ALOT of things on it, such as fuel injection, O2 sensors, etc. If this fuse keeps blowing, take a look at the downstream Oxygen sensor (After catalytic converter) wire harness. Chrysler actually issued a TSB on this. The wire harness zip-tie/retainer is usually the piece that breaks, which causes the wire to contact the rear driveshaft, thus the wire's insulation rubs off and the wire grounds out on the driveshaft. I had a 1996 Grand Cherokee 4.0L in my shop a few months ago that was doing this. It took me 3 days to chase this problem down. The customer was on a tight budget, so I installed a new zip-tie and re-wrapped the wire harness with heat shrink tape, rather than install a new O2 sensor. Problem solved. My customer was happy, and when he brings the vehicle in for LOF's I check the repair, and it's still holding up. I hope this can help someone.

Reply 29 : 97 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo keep dying upon ignition

I had the same problem for almost a year no body could fix it I almost replace every part but my problem was the wires that connect to the pcm computer it got 3 wires connector my failing one was the closer to the engine o fixed temporary I stick in a piece of cloth very tie between this connector and the water container ang it rn great for a long time I couldn't
find this part no where but the junk yard. I hope it works for you . you got a start your vehicle and then move the connector with your hand to find out wish one is causing the problem if it doeskin star have some body else to start it while you move the wires connectors.

Background:

My old laptop has been essentially crippled by some nasty virus (I think it will take a total wipe to fix it), but because of some other problems I'd been having prior to this infection I decided to purchase a new laptop, rather than get it fixed.

I want to be extra careful with this new laptop, and make it as virus-proof as possible (especially as I am uncertain as to how I got such a nasty rootkit on my old laptop.)

I'm going to make sure to create a recovery disc, as well as follow the advice presented in this thread and this article, but I've got a few questions for you guys, if you'd be so kind to advise me.

Laptop Info

The new laptop will be running Windows 7 (64 bit)

If you require any other information let me know.

Queries:

1. What antivirus would you recommend?

I want a powerful (but not too system-slowing) antivirus to help guard my computer. I considered ESET NOD32, but after some research found that it can crash some Windows 7 computers.

Is Microsoft Essentials an effective enough antivirus prevention, and if not, which do you feel is best? (I would prefer a suite, with firewall, anti-phishing, etc)

2. Would you recommend KeyScrambler

3. Any other suggestions?

Restricted user accounts and software restriction policies is what you want.

It doesn't matter. Some are light on ressources, others do not flag system files as malicious, and some others might have a slightly better detection rate this week.

AV software can be a piece of your security strategy, but not the only one. You can not buy security, you have to live it. It is your behaviour that decides if malware is installed or not. It is not the "security software" you bought.

I'd suggest not using IE. Use firefox or Chrome. If you use firefox try using sandboxie. If you use Chrome enable "xss auditing" in the about:flags page.

Using adblock plus you can stop certain malicious sites from loading, or you can do this through custom firmware in your router.

Here's one of the lists I use:

http://malwaredomains.lanik.us/malwaredomains_full.txt

For an antivirus I would suggest MSE. If you automatically download windows updates it should update itself. It's lightweight as well.

UAC should be turned to MAX if you want to be extra-careful.

Keep everything up to date! I suggest using a file-hippo autoupdater to keep as many applications up to date, such as flash, java, or whatever else on your computer.

If you do everything above you'll be fine. I don't even do everything above and I'm fine.

edit: link to sandboxie

http://www.sandboxie.com/

It gives firefox a really big extra layer of protection, similar to what Chrome has built in (except Chrome takes it quite a few levels up.)

If you use firefox with sandboxie it should be pretty secure. If you want to be super paranoid about it you can go ahead and use noscript to block javascript on sites.

Ummmmm what else....

DON'T have more than one realtime antivirus installed at once. You can have a real time + scanner, but not two real times. Two of them will make you LESS secure because they will interfere with eachother.

I personally keep a .exe of SUPERAntiSpyware on my computer just in case I want to install it/ can't download it because of a virus.

- If you are not sure about what to use and you are willing to spend money, simply buy NIS2011 and be done with it.

Just look for the best rebate/deal available.

- Use a user account for your daily routine.

Do NOT use an admin account for this. An admin account is meant for just that; administering stuff.

- Create 2 partitions; a separate partition for your OS+progs and one for data, e.g. pics, docs, music, movies etc.

After installing and updating the OS+progs, make an image of this partition.

If you bork your system despite whatever security software installed, you can easily restore the image in minutes and have a clean notebook again.

This will require you to learn about partitioning and imaging but it's time well spent.

- Like already mentioned, keep all progs up-to-date. F.i. with Secunia PSI.

Outdated software is one of the easiest ways to get accidentally infected.

- If you'd like to use free software, an AV (MSE, Avast, Avira), the Windows firewall and Sandboxie should be enough for 'normal' usage.

But be prepared to learn a bit about Sandboxie. It's a lovely program but it does take some time to configure and understand it well.

Reply 5 : Best Security

Honestly, you don't have to be paranoid to stay safe. Don't click popups, dno't go to suspicious sites... you should be fine.

For a while my only defenses were the ones provided by Chrome and MSE. Never had any problem with those alone. I've recently added additional security by forcing certain sites to route to a nonexistent IP instead of my computer. Basically any ad sites or malicious sites go to my router and my router goes "Hey, the computer's at 0.0.0.0" and they never get to me. Obviously it's not a complete list, but it helps, and no ads!

Really though if you want to be safe:

1) STAY UP TO DATE, flash, windows updates, java, antivirus

2) Install MSE

3) Use a popup blocker

you should be fine with those.

Reply 6 : Best Security

For free antivirus, I typically use eith Avria or MSE, and for paid, I use ESET NOD32. If your concerned about it crashing your system, just try the trial first.

Most other things have already been mentioned.

Another things I recommend is find a program you like to make images of your system. I have a large external drive that I use just to store images, and I only connect it to either backup or restore the images (so it's less likely to get infected).

Virtual machines are a really good idea to. They're easier to manage if they do become infected. I haven't used sandboxie before, so I'm going to go try that myself.

Reply 7 : Best Security

I've never used sandboxie, but it should be pretty good. Not quite what Chrome does but a start.

I wouldn't bother paying for an AV, they all have essentially the same detection rates, but NOD32 is an excelled one.

I personally feel that VM's just take too much away from the system. I would definitely suggest making a system restore point once in a while as well as a system image. I have a 250GB hard drive for all of my stuff and I keep an image on there.

edit: Oh, and don't bother trying to run Chrome in sandboxie. I don't think it works and it would be pretty useless anyway.

Reply 8 : Best Security

Thanks for all your helpful responses, I'll definitely take them into account.

I am a bit paranoid I'm afraid Hungry Man! I tried to be as sensible as possible on this laptop (it's had no notable virus issues in two years) so it freaked me out a bit getting such a bad one.

And I'm sorry if I seem a bit clueless about this stuff, but to be honest it's because I am! That's why I came for help, we can't be experts on everything right? :]

Thanks again.

If you only take 2 pieces of advice from the above posters...

1) do not use internet explorer, use chrome or firefox and keep up to date

2) do not use an administrator account, use a user account
