I'm new to pc gaming (my old laptop was terrible), so could someone briefly explain to me what steam is?
Am I right in thinking that you use it to activate + buy games? Also, will it automatically store them on your hard drive if you have the cd? And do i need to be connected to the internet to use these games?
(I made an account and I'm installing the game atm)
Thanks

It depends on the game really whether you require constant internet connection or not. Most of the time, there's the offline mode.
If you have steam games, you can pretty much download the game without requiring the disc. Really handy in the case that you lose your installation disc. In fact, you don't even need the disc to play the game.
It keeps your games up to date with any patches usually so that's good ._. There's also the steam overlay where you can just chat with your steam friends quite easily No alt tabbing needed
You can read more on wiki or at steam website itself
Oh yeah, they have awesome discounts most of the time

Grr when I try to install it, it says: "the program can't start because PhysXLoader.dll is missing from your computer"
What does that mean?

By the way....wait until Christmas time. Steam has rediculous sales. You can pick up first rate games for $5.00 to $15.00 each. They run different specials every day during the Christmas season. Specials like Resident Evil 5 for $10, Dead Space for $7, and Crysis/Crysis Warhead complete pack for $15 are very common.
I've bought 10-12 games from them each of the last two Christmas' and it takes me the next year to get through them all.
Highly recommended.

I had the same issue after installing Metro 2033, all I had to do was restart and the game started up just fine. Its quite a common issue.
