Sound problems while trying to run old video games on XP

I have a video game i just love to play, unfortunately it's from the era of the first video games with voice & sound. It used to play fine on my win9598 machine but when i bought a new computer win windows xp the sound will not work on this game. It has a utility to manually set the sound but no matter which channel i set it to it usually locks up the computer. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Try to download some codec for the audio as your computer might have lost some codec for audio.I am not sure if it work for a video game. I did it before when my computer cant play the audio in my video.

I don't think there's any problem with the codec's as all my other video game and movie's have no sound issue's. I actually know what the problem is but don't know how to fix it. The game is called Indiana Jones and the fate of Atlantis and it has a very quirky sound utility. The problem is that when you manually set or use the auto-detect feature to find what IRQ the sound card is on, it will only let you set it to channel 2,3,5 or 7 and my sound card is on 23. I don't know if I can change my sound card IRQ or not and if so will it screw up my other games or movies as far as sound go's.
