Malware problem

Hi all,

I'm having a problem with a laptop running XP with SP2 after a friend borrowed it. It boots up fine but won't launch any applications - it brings up the "launch with" dialogue box.

After posting on another cnet forum someone thought it may be malware and suggested a course of action (http://forums.cnet.com/7726-6132_102-5098912.html?tag=posts;msg5099421
). One of them was running rkill. Did this and it found a single malware process running. Followed the other instructions given and it appeared to remove the malware and remove several trojans.

Rebooted the laptop but the same problem occurred. Reran rkill and it once again found a single malware process running, however this time it was linked to a different file.

If I can help avoiding a complete reinstall of XP that would be great. If not, then so be it.

Thanks for any assistance.

Clive..

When you say XP "brings up the "launch with" diaglogue box, do you mean the "Open With"?

If so, see if this helps. Go to http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

Scroll down to line 12 in the left-hand column. Click on "EXE (lnk and regfile) fix for Windows XP". Then (as noted on the top of the page) save ("save link as") the REG File to your hard disk. Double click on it and answer yes to the import prompt.

It might help to know the name of the "malware process" you're having a problem with. And what scanner detects it.

For the time being, try the above and see if helps..
Carol
